The practice

Sit and consider directly: there is nothing inside me. No mind, no intellect, no organs, no interior machinery. Not as a denial of biology but as a description of what can actually be found when you look. Hold it and let thinking subside along with the things named.

What it works on

The list is chosen to include the very faculties doing the meditating. Once mind and intellect are among the things being held as absent, the practice has nowhere to stand, and the text says thoughts are abandoned as a result.

Notes

  • Do not argue with it. The practice is the holding, not the proving.

Practise gently

Shoonyaka offers educational and contemplative material, not medical, psychological or religious authority. Nothing here diagnoses or treats any condition. Stop any practice that leaves you dizzy, frightened or unwell, and treat a strong reaction as a reason to rest rather than to push on.
