Before you try this

As with the other large dissolution practices: stop if you feel unreal or frightened, and avoid this one if you have experienced dissociation.

The practice

Take the world as you ordinarily perceive it, solid and separate. Let it resolve into something finer — energy, pattern, movement. Then let that resolve into whatever it arises from. Then let the mind that has been doing the resolving dissolve as well, and do not replace it.

What it works on

A stepwise dissolution rather than a sudden one, which makes it steadier than the fire practices though it goes further. The last step is the one the text is really after; the first three exist to get you into a position from which it is possible.

Notes

  • Give each stage real time. Rushing to the last step means arriving there with nothing dissolved.

Practise gently

Shoonyaka offers educational and contemplative material, not medical, psychological or religious authority. Nothing here diagnoses or treats any condition. Stop any practice that leaves you dizzy, frightened or unwell, and treat a strong reaction as a reason to rest rather than to push on.
