What is gentle Ujjayi?
Ujjayi gives the breath a faint ocean-like texture by using a very subtle sensation at the throat. This gentle version excludes forceful constriction and retention. If the sound becomes harsh, dry, or loud, return to ordinary nasal breathing.
How to practise
- Sit comfortably and first exhale through the open mouth as though softly fogging a mirror.
- Close the mouth while keeping only a subtle trace of that throat sensation.
- Inhale and exhale through the nose with a quiet ocean-like whisper.
- Keep the face, neck, and throat relaxed; do not try to make the sound impressive.
- Release the throat immediately if it feels dry, tight, raspy, or effortful.
Possible benefits
- May add a gentle texture for attention to follow.
- May encourage deliberate, smooth breathing.
- May pair comfortably with gentle movement or sitting.
- The throat should remain relaxed; do not rasp, squeeze, or constrict forcefully.
- Avoid the practice if it irritates a sore, dry, or sensitive throat.
- Return to ordinary nasal breathing if you cough, feel air hunger, become dizzy, or feel uncomfortable.
