The practice
When you notice you are holding two thoughts — an option and its alternative, a thing and its opposite — do not choose between them. Let go of both at the same moment and remain in the place between where they were. Do not fill it.
What it works on
Choosing keeps the machinery running. Dropping one leaves the other. The instruction is specifically to release both simultaneously, because that is the only move that leaves nothing behind to continue the sequence.
Notes
- Easiest to catch during an actual small decision, which is why this one works well off the cushion.
Practise gently
Shoonyaka offers educational and contemplative material, not medical, psychological or religious authority. Nothing here diagnoses or treats any condition. Stop any practice that leaves you dizzy, frightened or unwell, and treat a strong reaction as a reason to rest rather than to push on.
