What this mantra is
A plain reading: we hold in attention that radiant, worthy light of the sun; may it awaken our understanding. It is traditionally chanted at sunrise, midday or sunset.
How to practise
- Sit facing any comfortable direction, ideally soon after waking.
- Read the verse slowly once, syllable by syllable, before chanting.
- Chant one full line per exhale so the breath stays unhurried.
- Rest for a few natural breaths after the final round.
Notes
- Traditions differ on initiation, timing and pronunciation. Shoonyaka presents the verse plainly for study and personal practice.
- Slow and clear beats fast and many. Nine rounds done well is a complete practice.
- Do not rush the lines to fit a count.
- If pronunciation feels uncertain, read the transliteration aloud slowly rather than guessing at speed.
Practise gently
Shoonyaka offers educational wellbeing guidance, not medical advice or treatment. Practise seated or lying safely, never while driving, in water, or operating equipment. Stop immediately and return to natural breathing if you feel dizzy, faint, breathless, numb, panicked, painful, or unwell. If you are pregnant, under 18, have a heart, blood-pressure, neurological or respiratory condition, or are recovering from illness or surgery, seek guidance from a qualified healthcare professional before breath retention or unfamiliar breathwork.
